1st ship of the "Grande Africa" class (10 vessels), also see >Grande Africa<, >Grande Atlantico<, >Grande Brasile<, >Grande Argentina<, >Grande Francia<, >Grande San Paolo<, >Grande Amburgo< and >Grande Nigeria< - equipped with 2 cranes of a lifting capacity of 40 ts each, total lane length: 3,505 m - enroute from Hamburg to Casablanca, in the Bay of Biscay, 263 kilometers southwest of the tip of Penmarc'h (Brittany), the forward container section of the ship caught fire in the evening of March 10th, 2019. The fire spread soon, and shortly after midnight it got out of control. The fire-fighting operations have been suspended on March 12th in order not to downgrade the situation, because the ship was listing to starboard side increasingly. On March 12 at 3:26 p.m, the ship sank on a water depth 4600 meters, about 180 nautical miles west of the French coast in position 046 04 08.0N 005 47 04.0W after the list had become worse over the time. |
