Additional Information |
After loading 150,000 tonnes of oil in Basra, Iraq, the >Sounion< declared that she was heading for Cyprus. She was harassed several times on August 21st 2024 by small Houthi boats and then hit by 3 missiles. The first fire broke out in the engine room. It was brought under control, but other fires broke out on deck. On September 14th, the >Sounion< was taken in tow. The convoy headed under escort for a place of refuge in the shelter of the Hanish and Zukur Islands, 80 km off the coast of Eritrea. Passing ships showed that the fire was now raging on the deck. On October 12th, the JMIC (Joint Maritime Information Center of the international naval coalition in the Red Sea) announced that all of the fires had been extinguished. But resumption cannot be ruled out. An operation to transfer the approximately 150,000 tons of crude oil from the >Sounion< to the >Delta Blue<, using portable equipment, started at a safe anchorage point in the port of Suez on November 7th |
