In the 17th Century the fortress "Munckholm" was built that also served as a state prison, and the name "Munkholmen" naturalized. During the occupation of Norway in World War II German troops converted the island into a fixed anti-aircraft position. Today the island is a popular summer destination for swimming and sun bathing. |
