03:00 p.m. - we are now on our tour and arrive at the ruins of "Iona Nunnery" - excerpt from Wekipedia: the nunnery was founded either in 1207 or 1208. It was dedicated to either "Saint Mary" or "Saint Oranna" and, according to the Holy See, belonged to the Augustinian order and not, as is sometimes claimed, to the Benedictine order. In 1574 the headwoman gave up the land, which is why it seems logical that the monastery was abandoned at this point. In 1923 parts of the ruins were restored. Four silver spoons and fragments of a golden ribbon were found. Numerous sculptures and worked stones were found on the site. |
